Rhodiola rosea is a hardy, perennial herb that thrives in arctic and alpine environments, such as Alaska. Used as traditional medicine for centuries, modern medicine is discovering its use as an adaptogen. Reported benefits include stress and anxiety relief, increased energy and stamina, improved immunity, mental clarity and focus, and faster workout recovery.
An adaptogen is a type of herb that aids the body in fighting and resisting stress physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Rhodiola’s most well-known compounds are called rosavins and salidrosides. These help balance neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and cortisol.
While we think these are super important, we’ve seen how the whole plant, with over 140 chemical compounds just in the roots, works together to offer incredible benefits. The literature from rhodiola studies refers to such a wide spectrum of potential benefits that it can sometimes be read like science fiction.
Studies have shown that it may:
Rhodiola is also packed with antioxidants that reduce inflammation and protect against age and stress related cellular damage. There are even promising laboratory studies that demonstrate rhodiola might halt the growth of certain types of cancer.
We suggest speaking to your doctor before adding any new supplements or vitamins to your routine. In general, Rhodiola rosea is well tolerated with few side effects and interactions, but starting with a small dose and increasing as needed is always wise.
Rhodiola rosea is not the easiest crop to grow. It takes diligent, hands-on work at every step in the process to maintain a pure, organic, potent medicinal plant. It is worth all the work, however, knowing that our family produces the highest quality Rhodiola for our own use and our customers as well.
To us, trust is personal. We are a small, family-run farm in North Kenai, Alaska, and our name, land, and livelihood are tied to everything we grow. We’re always willing to share how and why we farm the way we do, and we welcome questions about our practices and products.
Our family believes farming is about caring for the land and each other. When you choose Cabin Lake Farms, you’re supporting family and friends, responsible farming, and an amazing plant that can change your health for the better.
We want to make sure our practices matched our values, so shortly after starting our farm we began pursuing Oregon Tilth organic certification — one of the most respected programs in the country. Every plant in our fields is 100% certified organic.
Being organic means no herbicides, no shortcuts, and a deep respect for the soil and the ecosystem that sustains it. Every year, our certification process reaffirms our commitment to purity, transparency, and sustainability.
While it is true that our kids take it and have benefitted from it (especially our daughter with ADHD), due to the lack of research specifically done with children we cannot officially recommend its use with young ones without your family doctor’s permission.
As for pets, Rhodiola has been used with dogs to calm anxiety. However, our tincture is NOT safe for animals due to the alcohol it is made with. If you want to create a dog-safe product, our dried root is organic and perfect for making your own items. Just be sure to do your research and talk to your veterinarian before trying it with your pet!
